Pupils rewarded for walking to school
Children who have embraced the health and environmental benefits of walking to school have been rewarded for their efforts.
More than 160 primary schools in Kent and Medway take part in the KM-backed popular Walk on Wednesday (WOW) and Walking Bug schemes and on Challenge Day classes recording the highest number of walkers were awarded trophies and prizes.
Jackie Chambers of KM Walk to School, took the Walking Bug along with her to meet children from the winning class and present them with a trophy, certificate and free entry tickets to Leeds Castle and The Powell-Cotton Museum and Gardens.
Walk on Wednesday encourages all pupils to make a commitment to green transport by always walking or cycling in on a Wednesday.
Its partner scheme the Walking Bug offers incentives to pupils to walk throughout the week, including offering stickers and tally cards and fun curriculum-based activities as a reward.
The schemes have the backing of major companies including HSBC, which has provided £10,000 of funding and Volker Highways, which has donated £12,000.
Mark Dunleavy of WOW sponsor Volker Highways said: "“WOW and Walking Bug are worthy causes and the fitness of our young people is very important. Add that issue to the great carbon reduction figures achieved and it is easy to see why Volker Highways are delighted to be a sponsor”.
HSBC's Julia Smith said: "The HSBC continues to be delighted at the success of WOW and in hearing of how young children are excited about walking to school, knowing that they are doing something which is healthy and also helping the environment."
Other sponsors include The Co-operative and Chatham Maritime Trust.
