Wow challenge winners named

Children have been rewarded for going the extra mile and making a big effort to walk to school on the KM-backed Walk on Wednesday (WOW) and Walking Bug schemes.

More than 160 primary schools in Kent and Medway take part in the popular schemes and on Challenge Day classes recording the highest number of walkers were awarded trophies and prizes.

Jackie Chambers of KM Walk to School, took the Walking Bug along with her to meet children from the winning class and present them with a trophy and their prize vouchers.

Free child tickets to some of the county's top attractions have been donated  just in time for the Easter holidays, including tickets to Leeds Castle, Howletts Wild Animal Park and the Powell-Cotton Museum and Gardens.

Walk on Wednesday, encourages all pupils to make a commitment to green transport by always walking or cycling in on a Wednesday. Its partner scheme the Walking Bug offers incentives to pupils to walk throughout the week, including offering stickers and tally cards and fun curriculum-based activities as a reward.

The schemes have the backing of major companies including HSBC, which has provided £10,000 of funding and Volker Fitzpatrick, which has donated £12,000.

Mark Dunleavy of WOW sponsor Volker Fitzpatrick said: "We are delighted to support such a worthy and well organised scheme, which not only encourages children to take exercise in such an easy way, but also supports the reduction of C02 emissions by reducing the number of car journeys in our communities."

HSBC's Julia Smith said: "The HSBC continues to be delighted at the success of WOW and in hearing of how young children are excited about walking to school, knowing that they are doing something which is healthy and also helping the environment."

Willesborough win Ashford title

The Walking Bug presented the KM Green Footsteps trophy to Kayleigh, seven, and Ryan, eight, of Class 3.4, Willesborough Junior School, Willesborough.
The class won the award for the highest number of walkers in the Ashford District with 100 per cent walking to school on the challenge day.
Jo Kozlowski, Family Liaison Officer and WOW Coordinator, said: "The children really enjoy receiving their sticker each week and the other children here at Willesborough Junior school will really be spurred  having seen Class 3.4 win the challenge.  Hopefully more and more will walk on Wednesday now that spring is here." 
 
 
 

Three classes compete for top honours at St Mary's 

 

 
 
 Eight-year-olds Rhiannon Thorogood and Ryan Bellman Lapwings class at St Mary's RC Primary School, Whitstable receive the KM Green Footsteps trophy from the Walking Bug for the Canterbury area.
 
 
   
Three fit and fabulous classes tied the result with 100 per cent a St Mary's, Whitstable. 
 Lapwings, Herons and Seagulls tied in poll position with Lapwings selected as the eventual winners.  Mrs Thorogood, Walk to School Coordinator could not contain her pride in the effort that all of the children and parents had made.  Mrs Thorogood, said: "I think that St Mary's have really made such a tremendous effort.  A total of 299 children in total walked which is just fantastic.  I cannot choose between the three winning classes.  I think they are all winners"
Lapwings class was chosen as an overall winner.  The staff of the three winning classes got together and decided that the fairest way to celebrate their classes successes was to share the prize vouchers amongst their children.  So now 90 children and not just 30 will enjoy a day out courtesy of the WOW challenge day.  Ms Ingram, assistant head said:  "St Mary's is all about teamwork and it is St Mary's that have won"
Rhiannon Thorogood, of Lapwings Class, at St Mary's Catholic Primary School, said: "It is a good idea to walk to school it helps the environment and you get more exercise. I walk to school every day." 
Ryan Bellman also of Lapwings Class, said: "Walking to school is good exercise and it cuts down on pollution.  The walking bug was cute."

Eagles soaring high in Dartford

 
Eagles Class of The Gateway Primary School, Dartford won the award for the highest number of walkers in the Dartford district with 97 per cent of children walking to school. 
Heather Overton, head teacher, at The Gateway Primary School, said: "WOW is having a great impact on the health and fitness of our children. Walking to school makes them fit for the day."
Dean, of Eagles Class, said: "WOW is really a good idea, it gets everyone walking to school and it is good for our school name.  All the children big and small like the Walking Bug."
Maddie Moore also of Eagles class said: "WOW is a fun way of bringing our school together. 
"Everyone looks forward to getting a sticker. At the end of each term it is announced in assembley the percentage of walkers for each class for Wednesdays.  The walking bug was hilarious."
  
  
 Ella and Joseph, both seven, from Sandwich Infant School receive the KM Green Footsteps trophy from the Walking Bug. 
   

Sandwich Infant score 100 per cent

Class 5 at Sandwich Infant School, won the award for the highest number of walkers in the Dover District with 25 out of 25 children walking to school on the challenge day.
Ella said: "The walking bug was very friendly. I walk to school every day with my mum." 
Joseph said: "I cycle from Worth every Wednesday with my mum and brother, it  keeps us fit and healthy." 
Libby Wood, head teacher, said: "Since the instigation of Walk on Wednesday the parents and children have made a real effort to walk to school.  Although many of them live away from the town they make the effort to park and walk.  Walk on Wednesday makes a real contribution to our status as a Healthy School."
Sandwich Infant school have taken 427 cars off Kent's roads from 5 January.

Eco team take lead for Dragonflies

Dragonflies Class won the Folkestone title with 20 out of 21 children walking on the challenge day. Aly Ward, head teacher said: "WOW has been really successful at Hawkinge Primary School. Parents and children have shown a real commitment to walking on a Wednesday come rain or shine. On a Wednesday traffic is noticeably lower in Hawkinge. We are all really proud of the children showing such committment." 
Ms Allyson Nicholson-Taylor, eco co-ordinator said: "The eco-team organise the Walk on Wednesday.  They give out WOW tickets to the walkers and collect the data afterwards. They help it run very smoothly with very little adult input."
Shannon, of Dragonflies class, said: "I enjoy walking on a Wednesday it is good fun and keeps you healthy.  It also helps the animals in the Antartic."
Jake, of Dragonflies class, said: "It is a good idea to walk to school and keep your body fit and healthy. Also to stop the ice melting and to save the Polar Bears."
Hawkinge Primary School have taken 414 cars off the road from 5 January.
  
  
 Manvir and Sohrab, both 11, from Class 6B at Wrotham Road Primary School, Gravesend receive the KM Green Footsteps trophy from the KM Walking Bug. 
   

Top marks for Wrotham Road

Class 6B won the Gravesham title with 100 per cent, 26 out of 26 children, walking.  Manvir of Class 6B said: "I walk to school every Wednesday. It is good for our health to walk to school. I have never been to Leeds Castle, looking forward to visiting now."
Sohrab of Class 6B  said: "I walk to school every Wednesday with my family. Walking to school helps the environment, by reducing pollution. I am looking forward to going to Howletts with my family." 
Mr Hovey, head teacher, said: "WOW is a fantastic way to promote a healthy environmentally friendly means of travelling to and from school.  We are delighted how seriously the children take their responsibility."

Thurnham earn Maidstone title 

Orange Class of Thurnham CE Infant School won the Maidstone title the children achieved 100 per cent walking, 30 out of 30 children walked.  Orange Class won the Maidstone title .
Millie, six, of Orange Class, said: "I walk to school every day with mummy and my brothers." 
Jude, six, of Orange Class, said: "I walk every day to school with my family and meet friends and chat on the way to school".  Mrs Hanrahan, Healthy Schools Coordinator, said: "The children enjoy WOW and make a special effort to walk on Wednesday, but a lot of children walk to school every day. Local public houses have agreed to let parents use their car park while they walk to school with their children. The children love collecting the sticker on the wow tally card and are very keen to take part in the challenges."
Julia Smith from the HSBC really enjoyed the Walking Bug visit, she said: "The HSBC continue to be delighted as to the success of WOW and hearing how young children are excited about walking knowing they are doing something healthy and helping the environment."

Monster effort from Medway winner

Pupils from Dragons class at New Road School, Chatham, won a trophy and top prizes for making a monster effort to walk to school on the KM-backed Walk on Wednesday (WOW) and Walking Bug schemes.
They recorded the highest number of walkers for the WOW and Walking Bug Challenge Day. An impressive 98 per cent of the class walked in on the day, making the Dragons the Medway champions.
Jamie, of Dragons class, said: "I walk to school every day with my family, we chat on the way and it is good exercise."  Emma, also in Dragons class, said: "I walk to school every day with my mum, walking to school is safe and good exercise". 
Katie, of New Road School, modelled building site safety clothing a the event. She said: " I found the talk very helpful I will not be playing on building sites."
Tina Cryer, deputy head teacher, said: "The children have really enjoyed WOW. There is a great sense of excitement in assembly when the weekly winner is announced. The safety talk was expertly pitched the children loved the visual nature of the talk and I am sure that they have all taken the message on board."
James Sutton, School Travel Advisor, Medway Council said "It was a pleasure to see the pupils grasp the message so enthusiastically and achieve a fantastic 98 per cent walk to school percentage on WOW challenge day. A credit to Medway.
 
 
  
 Six-year-olds Ciaran and Faye from the Oaks Community Infant school, Sittingbourne receive the Walking Bus trophy and framed certificate. 
   

Golden shoe winners scoop district challenge award

Class 6 at the Oaks won the Swale title the children achieved 97 per cent per cent, 29 out of 30 children walked to school.  Ciaran Vine  said: "I walk to school every day with my mum and sister, it is good exercise and we meet friends on the way to school."
Faye Baxter also from Class 6 said: "Because of WOW I now walk to school on Wednesdays with my mum and sister."
Caroline McCahan, Eco-Coordinator said: "The children are very enthusiastic about walking to school and enjoy the school competition each Wednesday. The winning class is presented with the Golden Shoe trophy each Thursday during assembly."
 
 
 
  

 

Highest score for Thanet's walk to school champions 

Class 6T won the Thanet title with the children achieving 100 per cent of children walking to school.
Katie, said: "I walk to school every day with my family and friends, we chat on the way to school, it is a healthy way to get to school." 
Ezekiel, said: "I walk to school every day. Walking to school is so easy for everyone to do.  The Walking bug will be an inspiration to win the next challenge day."
Di Springett, head teacher, said: "Our children participate with enthusiasm and our WOW trophy is presented weekly in assembly for the class with the highest percentage.  Our healthy schools co-ordinator Mrs Debs Pegden inspires the children to walk on Wednesdays."
Keith Dunmall, Audience Development and Learning Manager at the Powell Cotton House and Museum and Gardens said: "It's great to see a school so committed to their walking. They even have their own WOW award." 
  
 

Eco team collect data for Sevenoaks winner

Sycamore Class of Churchill CEP School won the Sevenoaks title the children achieved 100 per cent walking on the challenge day. 
Maisie, of Sycamore class, said: "The Walking Bug was cool. I walk to school every Wednesday and it is a good form of exercise.  Also it is much calmer on a Wednesday at the school gate." 
James, also in Sycamore Class,  said: "I walk to school with my family, its good exercise, we are saving our planet and not wasting fuel. The Walking bug was Bugtastic."
Mrs Duffield, head teacher, said: "The Walk on Wednesday scheme has been extremely popular with our children.  Members of  the Eco Team have been responsible for collating the data and the children have set a brilliant example to all members of our community."

So keen to earn stickers each week

Class 2 of Aylesford Primary School won the Tonbridge and Malling title with the children achieving 100 per cent walking.  22 out of 22 children walked to school on the challenge day. 
Emily, of Class 2,  said: "I walk to school on a walking bus with my friends it is great fun."
Harry said: "I walk to school every day on our walking bus with my friends." 
Jane Waring, Family Liaison Officer, said: "The children are really excited about walking to school and are keen to earn their stickers every week." 
Primary schools taking part in WOW and the Walking Bug in Tonbridge and Malling have taken 5,759 car journeys off Kents roads from 1 October. Aylesford school took 435 car run journeys  off Kents roads from 5 January.

St Matthews wins Tunbridge Wells challenge

Class 6C of St Matthews High Brooms Primary School won the Tunbridge Wells title the children achieved 100 per cent walking to school. 
Zoe, of Class 6C, said: "I think that walking to school on a Wednesday is a very good idea.  It encourages children not to use cars."  Jack, also of Class 6C, said: "I did not walk to school before, but now I walk on a Wednesday to school with my friends, it is a good idea to keep you fit."
Mrs Clarke, class teacher at St Matthew's High Brooms Primary School, said: "6C have tried exceptionally hard to walk to school every day and to encourage each other.  We are very proud of our award."
