The walk to school department at the KM Charity Team supports three walk to school schemes in Kent and Medway.
These are:
Walk on Wednesday
Also know as WOW, families are expected to walk to school a minimum of one day per week. The nominated day selected by schools is usually a Wednesday, but check which your school has opted for. Children receive a colourful cartoon card where they can stick a special sticker each week they walk. When the sticker card is full the child receives a reward.
Three times a year your child's class competes in a challenge day with all other participating classes within your council area. The class with the highest number of walks to school that day receives a trophy presented by the Walking Bug mascot. Children in the winning class receive certificates, tickets to Leeds Castle and a photo is taken to publish on this website and in your local KM Group newspaper.
Walking Bug
Walking Bug operates in a similar way to WOW except families are expected to walk to school every day. If a class completes a target number of walks to school that week they are rewarded with an exciting class activity based on a Kent landmark or attraction.
Sticker cards are used and when filled also earn the child a reward. Walking Bug classes compete against WOW classes in the challenge day as outlined above.
Walking Bus
This is a parent-led colaborative initiative where mums and dads team up to take it in turns to escort a column of children to school. The initiative is great because it releases busy parents from the task to taking children to school for the majority of each week.
Other benefits include: children taking road safety skill tests, family-orientated events including tedy bears' picnic and Easter egg hunt, end of term goodie bags to reward children for participation, plus free VIP membership to the KM Fun Club.
