Worthy winners collect awards for walking

Bishops Down winners receive their award from sponsor Jane Lawrence of Jelf.

Primary schools from Tunbridge Wells and Sevenoaks have been recognised for their commitment to improving the environment by removing car journeys from the road.

They were presented with certificates for their efforts at the KM Walk to School Awards at the Ramada Maidstone Hotel, where the special guest was conservationist and botanist, professor David Bellamy.

The Culverden Walking Bus at Bishops Down Primary School was the Top New Walking Bus Route.

Top volunteer Dawn Pogson from Hawkhurst Primary School.

Simon Dolby, chief executive of the KM Charity Team, which stages the awards, said the school has run walking buses for 11 years on two other routes and the new one has made a healthy start.

Benenden Primary was picked as the Top Established Walking Bus with children being encouraged to walk at least some of the way to this eco-friendly, green thinking school.

Dawn Pogson of Hawkhurst Primary School was named the Top Walking Bus Volunteer.

She was described as a “worthy winner” because she gives the school’s three buses huge amounts of her own time and effort.

The awards were supported by Ground:zero Productions, the Ramada Maidstone Hotel, Veolia Environmental Services, and D.Isom Printers.

KM Walk to School schemes are KCC and Medway Council-led initiatives and are sponsored by Denne, Bel UK (Mini Babybel), Ringway, Veolia, Eurostar, The Co-operative, Southern Water and P&0 Ferries.
