Barclays Money Skills Junior Charity Challenge

Young people invited to take the challenge

Children and young people can bid for a share of £10,000 to give to the charity or good cause of their choice.

The Barclays Money Skills Junior Charity Challenge is open to anyone up to the age of 25 who would like to win cash for a charitable project.

Successful applicants will be invited to make a three minute presentation to a panel of ‘dragons’ from the world of business and the charitable sector.

The competition is being run by the charity team at the KM Group. Simon Dolby from the team said it is a fantastic opportunity for young people to show off their entrepreneurial skills and raise money for a good cause.

“They can apply for up to £1,000, which can be for a specific project, piece of equipment or materials,” he said.

Mr Dolby added that they will need to submit a proposal, which will be considered by a short-listing panel.

Their application will need to be overseen by an adult from the charity or good cause even if they are over the age of 17.

Finalists will be invited to make a presentation on stage in front of a live audience and the panel will pick the winners.

Barclays Head of Community Delivery, Alan Hands, said: “We are really excited to be working with the KM Charity Team to support young people and charities across Kent.

“Barclays is committed to supporting communities and this is a great way of enabling local young people to work with the causes closest to their hearts.”

She added that Barclays Money Skills is a long-term commitment to improving people's money management throughout the UK.

Through the programme the bank works to help people improve their confidence and understanding of how to look after their finances, including budgeting, making informed choices and knowing where to get help.

The event is sponsored by Barclays bank and the KM Group supported by MidKent College.

The Kent Innovation and Enterprise Centre at the university will be giving tips to the finalists on how to best present their charitable idea to the panel.

Briefing documents for parents and guardians, teachers and charities are available now to download from the section below.

You must register on the site to apply.

Note: Funding cannot be used for an organisation's core costs, towards research or to support charitable activity holidays or gap year trips.

The 2012 event will be staged at the theatre at the Mid Kent College campus, Medway on the evening of Friday, February 10, 2012.

A rehearsal and briefing session will take place at the Mid Kent College campus, Medway on the morning of Saturday, January 21, 2012 for all the individuals and groups shortlisted for the final.

All applicants will be told pre Christmas if they have a place in the live final. We highly recommend finalists attend the rehearsal in January. The experience at past events is those attending briefing sessions usually end up winning more from the dragons than those that do not attend the rehearsal.
