Maidstone Big Quiz is great success

Mike Boddy of Somerfield Stores and Lynne Patterson of Barclays Bank present the KM Big Quiz trophy to Damon Lambert captain of Hoi Polloi and team mates, winners of the Maidstone KM Big Quiz staged on Friday night at Maidstone Leisure Centre.

Tiebreak question settles Big Quiz team placings

A sudden death showdown between three team captains added an exciting climax to a very sucessful night at the KM Big Quiz.

The Maidstone heat of the mammoth wine and wisdom evening was staged at Maidstone Leisure Centre on Friday night and raised more than £8,000 for charity.

Fifty two teams of eight people joined in the event with Supernova, The Moomins and Hoi Polloi all tied with 61 points out of a possible 70 at the end of the night.

The three team captains were called on stage to answer a sudden death eliminator which Damon Lambert captain of Hoi Polloi answered first.
The question was: Who wrote the cook book How to be a domestic Goddess? The answer is Nigella Lawson.

Three main charities will benefit from proceeds raised on the night: Trinity Foyer, the KM Group's Maidstone charity of the year, Heart of Kent Hospice and the children's road safety team at KM Walk to School. A donation will also be made to the Mayor of Maidstone's Charity Appeal.

The main sponsors on the night were Newnham Court Shopping Centre, Calls 4 Charities, Somerfield Stores, P&O Ferries, Shepherd Neame and DSH chartered accountants and business advisers.

Barclays matched £3,000 of the amount raised through the bar, raffle and heads and tails fundraising game to increase the charity pot from £5,000 to £8,000.

All three of the top teams will be invited to the county final of the KM Big Quiz later this year when they will take on winners from the Canterbury, Medway and Ashford heats of the event. For more information view www.kmbigquiz.co.uk

Army of helpers and sponsors praised

Volunteers and businesses were thanked by event organiser Dee Murphy.
Mrs Murphy said: "The generosity of local firms who gave their time and financial support to the event helped make the KM Big Quiz such a success."

Shepherd Neame supplied all of the beer, wine and soft drinks for the charity bar, which was manned by a team of volunteers from Barclays. An energetic group of runners from Blue Arrow Recruitment greeted guests as they arrived as well as collecting jokers and answer sheets from tables throughout the night.

Somerfield Stores Ltd, part of The Co-Operative Group, stepped in and donated 168 bottles of wine for guests and winners at the event. McDonald’s Restaurant at The Chequers Centre, Maidstone made sure that volunteers had something to eat, providing complimentary meals for all the helpers at the event.

Volunteers from Maidstone Lions did a great job in taking charge of the raffle.
